Jane Burke
General Manager, Serials Solutions, Seattle, WA, USA and Vice President, ProQuest
Aims:
To explore future role of the OPAC in light of the number of new "discovery layer" services that are being developed by librarians and vendors.
Methods:
Analyze institutional migration paths to new discovery layer applications and perceptual studies of librarians.
Results:
An increased number of "discovery layer" services are being adopted by libraries to replace the OPAC as a primary user interface.
Conclusion:
The future role of the OPAC is unstable due to positive librarian perceptions and increasing purchases of "discovery layer" services.
