QUEENSLAND MEMORY OUTREACH - CREATING ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS TO QUEENSLAND'S CULTURAL HERITAGE RESOURCES

Gavin Bannerman1& Margie Barram2
1 Outreach Librarian, Heritage Collections, State Library of Queensland, QLD
2 Senior Librarian, Digital Applications, State Library of Queensland, QLD

The State Library of Queensland's Online Public Access in Libraries service supports innovative projects that improve Queenslanders' access to information through funding from the Queensland Government's Blueprint for the Bush. The Queensland Memory Outreach project invites public libraries to become partners in its Picture Queensland service (http://www.pictureqld.qld.gov.au) and to collaborate with other cultural organisations - local museums, history groups and archives - within their region to share their image resources and training opportunities.

As Picture Queensland partners, regional cultural organisations digitise items from their photographic collections, create appropriate metadata records and include these records in Picture Queensland, and through record sharing, to the wider world.

Queensland Memory Outreach provides image digitisation training for contributing organisations. These organisations can contribute MARC records, exported from their Library Management System, or structured data [from an Access database, for example] to State Library for conversion to qualified Dublin Core. Alternatively, they may create qualified Dublin Core records and submit these, via a web form, direct to metadata repository. Partners can opt into preservation storage of master archival images through specific joint agreements, where State Library takes responsibility for the necessary server and software infrastructure.

Topics covered include:

  • Picture Queensland: Enhancing Queensland's pictorial record
  • Is there a need for an Outreach service?
  • Image digitisation training
  • Displaying external organisations' digital images and records
  • Technological infrastructure, challenges and workflows
  • Picture Queensland's standards framework
  • Joint agreements
  • Future directions
