BackKNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN THE LIFECYCLE OF CLINICAL DOCUMENTS
James Bosanquet
Cancer Institute NSW, Alexandria, NSW
The Cancer Institute NSW inherited various publications from its screening programs, these publications are based on clinical registry data and is useful as reference material as well as State Archives (which is the compliance aspect). Previously publications were used individually with specific connections, this project attempts to map those connections into a knowledge management system.
In digitising the publications, this project aims to addresses a community of researchers and statisticians within the Institute and to allow public access to past publications. To meet the needs of the research community the publications need to meet three requirements, to be a portable and searchable format, to be linked to research project documents within the records management system and there needs to be a bibliographic component to the publication metadata for citation use.
The meta-tagging requires surveying the research community about agreed terms and specific project names outside the functional classification system. This needs to be followed up with monitoring of the system and reviewing the meta-tagging to ensure relevance.
Considerations for knowledge management include, centralising the publication material and opening up the access, removing existing duplication and information ‘dead-ends’, creating connections and relationships linking authors and process documents and finally the need to review on an ongoing basis to ensure enthusiasm and use for the system.
