PRESENTATION A16
BackCHANGING THE TUNE - MATCHING LANGUAGE WITH USER NEEDS TO MAXIMISE DISCOVERABILITY
Anna Gifford
Australian Drug Foundation, Melbourne, VIC
Subject headings have long been a key component in information discovery, but changing literacies means that more than ever, the language or "voice" needs to be meaningful to the user group. This presentation examines voice in the context of controlled vocabularies, using case studies of thesaurus development within scholarly, online and specialist contexts. It asks the question, how can controlled vocabularies still be relevant in today's changing information environment?
Themes explored include:
- Understanding user needs
- Investigating user language
- Keeping a vocabulary current and fresh
- Leveraging technology to maximise discoverability
