Speakers Information

Chris Winter

Chris Winter works for the ABC's Innovation Division, and has a long background in new media, digital TV, technology marketing and radio.

His work has included projects to deploy ABC current and archive content on a number of platforms including off-deck mobile portals, Google Earth and Google Maps; and for its first two and a half years, managing ABC2.

It now includes developing and nurturing new relationships with third party content providers (including archives, libraries and museums), technology research bodies (including NICTA, CSIRO, University of Sydney, and UTS), industry bodies, government agencies and media organisations (including DBCDE); and supporting the marketing activities of the division, including content syndication.

He is a member of the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA), the Music Council of Australia, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences; has contributed to the annual conferences of the Screen Producers Association of Australia since 1999 and been a XMediaLab participant since they began in 2003, most recently in Amsterdam in November 2009 and Sydney in June 2010.

In 2004 Chris was the joint recipient of an Australian Recording Industry Association Award for Best Music DVD for his production work on Midnight Oil's Best of Both Worlds, and was presented with AIMIA's 2007 Outstanding Contribution Award.

He is a board member of screen development body Metro Screen Ltd, joined the Australian Government's Information Technology Industry Innovation Council in May 2009, since May 2010 on the Queensland Government's ICT Ministerial Advisory Group and from July 2010 on the board of the Creative Industries Innovation Centre (part of Enterprise Connect).


Michael Mace

Michael Mace is a principal at Rubicon Consulting, where he helps technology companies plan strategies and products. His clients include Nokia, Adobe, Yahoo!, VMware, Symbian, Symantec, and Logitech. He's a well-known tech industry speaker and commentator, and has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, CNN, BusinessWeek, and numerous tech industry publications.

Prior to Rubicon, he was vice president of product planning at Palm, and was also chief competitive officer at Palm and PalmSource, where he worked closely with operators and handset manufacturers to plan for the future of mobile devices and software. Prior to joining Palm, he served as vice president of marketing for Softbook Press, a leader in the creation of ebook devices and publishing systems; and was director of marketing for Silicon Graphics' Windows products division. Michael held a variety of leadership positions at Apple Computer, including director of Mac platform marketing, director of marketing for the Home and Education Division, and director of Market Intelligence. He also founded a software firm and has worked as a journalist. Michael holds a degree in international relations from UCLA.

Iarla Flynn

Iarla Flynn is Head of Public Policy and Government Affairs with Google for Australia and New Zealand. His policy focus is on preserving the benefits of the open Internet for all Australians. He joined Google in 2007 as European Public Policy Manager based at the Company's European HQ in Ireland. His role included leading Google's advocacy for communications and spectrum liberalisation across Europe. Prior to joining Google he spent 12 years in senior roles in government and telecomms operators in the Irish and European communications sectors.


Sebastian Chan

Sebastian Chan leads the Digital, Social and Emerging Technologies department at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. His teams include the museum's web unit, audio visual and photography, rights & permission and the photo library, the research library and Thinkspace, the Powerhouse's digital media teaching laboratories. He helps other organisations internationally strategize and implement cutting edge technologies in the cultural sector. Seb was also a member of the Australian Government's Government 2.0 Taskforce examining ways of improving citizen engagement with government and opening access to public sector information. Seb writes the popular Fresh & New(er) blog in the museum world, and leads a parallel life in electronic music and art as editor-in-chief of Cyclic Defrost Magazine.

Sarah Houghton-Jan

Sarah Houghton-Jan is the author of the award-winning blog about library technology, Librarian In Black, and is the Digital Futures Manager for the San José Public Library in the heart of Silicon Valley. Sarah was named a 2009 Library Journal Mover & Shaker as a Trendspotter. Sarah's first book, Technology Training in Libraries, came out in 2010 and she has been published widely in library and technology magazines and journals. She has presented internationally for libraries and other organizations on the intersection of libraries and technology, and is a prolific trainer, having taught over 50 in-person and online courses as a consultant instructor for Infopeople, a grant-funded library staff training program in California. Sarah received her MLIS from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and a MA in Irish Literature from Washington State University. Hailing from the Chicago suburbs, Sarah now resides in Marin County, California (just north of San Francisco) with her husband, who is also a librarian, and their laptop-snuggling cat, Torin.
